Nodes
Mask to Frames
Render Blender mask layers into a mask sequence.
Turns a Blender mask, the kind you draw in the Movie Clip Editor, into a Mask Frames
sequence the graph can use.
Settings
Clip and Mask pick what to render.
Invert Mask swaps white and black. Worth knowing which way round you need: white means "here" to whatever consumes the mask.
Use Scene Range renders the scene's frame range instead of the whole clip, with
Start and End when you want something specific.
Press Render Mask Sequence and the node reports how many frames it wrote.
When To Use This Instead Of AI Mask
Hand-drawn masks give you exact control, which matters for shapes the AI won't get right or areas defined by something other than an object, like a lens flare or a reflection.
For a mask that follows tracked geometry by itself, see Geo Mask, which lives in the Movie Clip Editor sidebar rather than being a node.
