Clean Plate

Paint out something in a shot by projecting a clean frame through the tracked camera.

Image Editor sidebar, Dope Track tab.

The whole clean plate workflow lives in this panel rather than in a node, because the painting happens in the Image Editor and the controls belong next to it. When you start a session, the modal editor takes over this very area.

The idea: pick a frame where the thing you want gone isn't blocking the view, project it through the tracked camera onto proxy geometry, and paint it over the frame where it is.

Source

Footage is the clip you're cleaning. Nothing else in the panel does anything until it's set, and it locks while a session is open.

If your solve calibrated the lens, point this at an undistorted plate. The projection doesn't model distortion, so it won't line up with the original. See Paint On The Undistorted Plate.

Dirty Frame is the frame you're fixing. Ref Frame is the clean one you're borrowing from. While you're painting, changing the dirty frame saves the frame you were on first, and the panel warns you about that.

Projection

Camera and Geometry. Leave Camera empty and it uses the scene camera, with a line telling you which one. Geometry is the proxy the reference frame gets projected onto, so rough boxes and planes matching the real surfaces are enough.

Brush

SettingWhat it does

Compare

A dropdown with two ways of checking your work against the reference:

OnionRef Opacity, to fade between the two
WipeWipe Position and Wipe Direction, for a hard split you can slide across

Output

Output is the folder the finished plate is written to. Save Paint Layer keeps your strokes as a separate layer alongside the result.

ST Map Scale sets the resolution the projection is baked at. It locks once a session is open, because changing it partway wouldn't match the strokes you've already made.

Running a session

Open Clean Plate starts painting, and turns into Cancel Clean Plate while a session is live. Both need footage, a camera and geometry before they'll enable.

While you work, the panel reports:

  • How many strokes are stored on the current dirty frame, with a button to throw them away
  • Which frames you've painted, once there's more than one
  • Undo usage, as a step count and a size in GB

Save Final Plate writes the result out.
